Frequently Asked Questions

About Research & Grant Administration at the College of Charleston

Proposals to all agencies, foundations, or corporations should be routed initially through ORGA to determine guidelines as well as other requirements. For research involving animals or human participants, ORGA will assist in the preparation and processing of review applications for the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) or for the Institutional Review Board (IRB).

How do I apply for a grant or fellowship?

Before a proposal is submitted, ORGA provides assistance with the necessary internal proposal procedures (Routing Sheet, budget development, current rates and institutional identifier information) as well as with the external application process. Though some agencies are still accepting paper applications, paperless, electronic submission is becoming more common. Most federal agencies support and require some form of Electronic Research Administration (ERA) in the application and funded research reporting processes. ORGA also provides support for grant seekers by providing a faculty workstation in our office with all of the necessary tools for electronic applications and administration of a grant.

"How can I actively find funding for my project?"

ORGA has access to several databases specific to external grant and fellowship funding opportunities. These databases can be accessed from any computer that has a College of Charleston-assigned IP address. See the ORGA web site for links to our current database subscriptions.

Can I receive notifications about funding opportunities via email?

Yes. In addition to some database-managed email subscriptions, ORGA also receives a multitude of opportunities including many local and state opportunities that may not be listed in the larger subscription databases. We then categorize and send these notices to the campus community via several discipline-specific mailing lists. You can select and subscribe to these local email alerts by visiting our web site (see above). You can add or remove yourself from any or all lists at any time.

When my proposal is funded, how do I set up an account, hire students, or purchase supplies for my project?

ORGA will help you coordinate establishment of an account with Latisha Collins, Grants Accountant in the Controller's Office. ORGA can also help coordinate with the Student Employment office, as well as our Human Resources, Academic Affairs, and Procurement Offices, as well as other College of Charleston divisions, where needed.

Is help available in meeting compliance requirements if my project involves animals or human participants?

ORGA will assist researchers in preparing the required protocol applications for both the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC)and for the Institutional Review Board (IRB). In addition, ORGA will provide resources for required investigator training in ethics and Research Protections & Compliance.

Is training required in the responsible and ethical conduct of research?

Beginning January 2010 in accordance with the America COMPETES Act, Section 7009: "Responsible Conduct of Research", NSF will require that every institution submitting a proposal must certify that it has a plan to provide appropriate training and oversight in the responsible and ethical conduct of research to undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers who will be supported by NSF to conduct research. A training plan is not required to be included in the proposal, but must be available on request.

The Office of Research & Grants Administration (ORGA) provides the following services:
  • Assistance with preparation and submission of requests for External Funding, and with management of funding agreements and accounts for funded projects.
