Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)

Research Protections & Compliance

The College of Charleston has constituted an Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) which will hold its first meeting in the early fall, 2008. The purpose of this committee is to ensure the protection of personnel and the environment by mandating safe handling, storage, and disposal of potentially biohazardous materials, including registration of all recombinant DNA research and instructional activities. It is anticipated that most research and instructional activities conducted at the College will be exempt from full IBC review according to the NIH Guidelines.

The IBC will function in compliance with the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules (59 FR 34496 and amendments). General biosafety procedures are guided by the CDC-NIH publication, Biosafety in Microbiological and Biosafety Laboratories. The College also complies with all other applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

If you have any questions or need assistance, contact: Eileen Callahan, Research Protections & Compliance, via e-mail callahane@cofc.edu or telephone (843-953-7421).
