Required Training For Research Involving Human Participants

Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative

The College of Charleston maintains a Federalwide Assurance (FWA) with the Office of Human Research Protection (OHRP), U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.  This Assurance includes a requirement that all research staff working with human participants will receive training in ethical guidelines and regulations.  "Research staff" is defined as persons who have direct and substantive involvement in proposing, performing, reviewing, or reporting research and includes students fulfilling these roles as well as their faculty advisors. The College of Charleston Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the Protection of Human Research Participants has approved the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (Modular) Web-based Training Program for use by College researchers and research staff  to satisfy the training requirement. Approved training must have occurred within the last three years and must be documented in the CITI training database. The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative Web-based Training Program maintains this database of all researchers who have completed training and the dates of module completions.  To add your name to this CITI training database, you must complete a CITI profile and at least one recommended module of approved training activities.

Completion of IRB-approved training is required of all persons conducting research with Human Participants at, or in conjunction with, the College of Charleston. If you have completed training at another institution or have any other questions, contact Eileen Callahan, Research Protections & Compliance. Training must be completed before a project can be approved by the IRB.

The training program consists of a number of modules which are grouped for your ease in selecting the correct track for your research. Each track consists of required and optional modules. You must complete all of the required modules before you can move on to the optional ones. Completion of some optional modules may be required by the IRB based on your type of research project. If you are uncertain about what group and/or modules to complete, please contact Eileen Callahan before beginning your training to be sure that you are completing all necessary modules for your research. Please note that it is not necessary to complete all of the modules in one session. The CITI system retains your information and you can access it at any time. Just be sure to remember your USERNAME and PASSWORD.

A quiz follows each module. You must attain a score of at least 80% on each quiz. When you have completed the entire training, please print out your completion report. An e-mail of your completion will also automatically be sent to the Research Protections & Compliance Coordinator.

The College of Charleston has contracted with CITI to provide on-line training for all faculty, staff, and students. College personnel and students have unlimited access, so we invite faculty members to use this online training resource for Research Methods Classes.
