The Office of Research and Grants Administration (ORGA) at the College of Charleston promotes externally funded research, training, and demonstration projects. ORGA is a central source of information on major government agencies, foundations, and corporations which support research and scholarship. Staff provide assistance to faculty members, administrators, and students from conceptual development and planning through implementation and management of funded projects. Assistance is provided in identifying potential extramural funding sources; developing proposal narratives and budgets; completing standardized application forms; assuring compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations; negotiating grant awards and contracts; and administering funded projects. ORGA provides administrative services for both the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) and for the Institutional Review Board (IRB).

Laurie Chamness, Director, is responsible for oversight of all ORGA activities. She manages policy and procedure development and implementation and reporting activities. Laurie works with faculty and staff to develop project ideas, prepare proposals, and manage awards, with particular emphasis on non-routine management issues. She provides technical assistance to research ethics committees and, as necessary, to special committees established to address intellectual property issues, conflicts of interest, and other research-related issues.
Susan Anderson, Assistant Director, assists faculty and staff in preparing grant proposals for submittal to sponsoring agencies, including developing project budgets and completing the internal routing form that is required for all proposal submissions. Once an award is made, she helps faculty and staff administer their grants, including issuing subawards and serving as liaison with funding agencies on matters such as budget modification and grant extension requests. Susan also coordinates with other College of Charleston offices to facilitate grant matters such as hiring and paying grant employees, procurement issues, and fiscal management.
Eileen Callahan, Research Compliance Coordinator, assists faculty and staff with their applications to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the protection of human subjects, and the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC). She coordinates the review process for these committees, including requests from non-College affiliated investigators to recruit participants for their studies on the CofC campus. Eileen also provides guidance on federal regulations and College research policies and procedures, biosafety issues, and training on topics related to the responsible conduct of research.
Dave Battey, Information Technology Coordinator, helps faculty and staff in identifying potential extramural funding sources. He maintains a number of email distribution lists to which faculty and staff may subscribe for receiving targeted funding alerts. He assists faculty and staff with electronic proposal submission and reporting. Dave serves as the campus liaison for online services provided by federal and private agencies necessary for grant application and administration. He provides training for faculty and staff in use of Electronic Research Administration (ERA) systems and software, and provides consultation, technical expertise, and installation services to campus users for IT needs required for full implementation of ERA.
Proposals to all agencies, foundations, or corporations should be routed initially through ORGA to determine guidelines as well as other requirements. For research involving animals or human participants, ORGA will assist in the preparation and processing of review applications for the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) or for the Institutional Review Board (IRB).
